The Malay Quarter

Bo-Kaap MuseumThe tour begins at the Bo-Kaap Museum which depicts the historic way of life of the city's Muslim community. It is furnished as a 19th century Muslim home.

The Bo-Kaap area has many mosques and is notable for the distinctive style of house favored by the descendants of the Malay slaves brought to the Cape during the Dutch occupation. We'll spend time becoming familiar with the history and culture of the people in the area.

We'll then walk through a lane to the oldest mosque in South Africa, and through Dorp Street where we view a strip of houses that have been proclaimed Tea in a private home in the Malay Quarter national monuments. The tour ends with tea and traditional Malay cakes in a private home in the heart of the Quarter.
