The Blue Train
THE BLUE TRAIN

The famous Blue Train operates year-round, traveling four itineraries in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Each journey stops at places of interest en-route, including a safari or tour of Bulawayo on the Pretoria to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe itinerary.

The Blue Train offers guests the comfort and luxury of a 5-star hotel. In the Club Car guests can view a short film on the region through which the train is passing, or anticipate the journey ahead—captured by a a front-of-train camera and projected to the passengers on a large screen. 

Accommodations: Your private deluxe or luxury suite, comprises lounge chairs, a writing desk next to a window, air-conditioning, telephone and television, en-suite marble bathrooms, with cotton kimonos and an assortment of luxury oils and soaps. All suites have a choice of twin or double beds. All meals and drinks are included. Attire for lunch is smart casual. Pretoria to Swakopmund, Namibia

South Africa's luxury steam train, Rovos Rail.Rovos Rail operates two trains of 20 carriages each, that have been refurbished splendidly with meticulous attention to detail, comfort and luxury. They can be drawn by either Steam, Diesel or Electric locomotives operating at various stages of the journey. It has become increasingly difficult to provide steam over the past years, however, steam is provided on certain stretches of each journey.

Accommodations: The trains, also called The Pride of Africa, each carry a maximum of 72 passengers in deluxe or royal suites. Each suite is beautiful with elegant wood, fabrics and decor including touches like fresh flowers, chocolates and robes. The spacious Royal Suites each have a private lounge, en-suite bathroom and the option of twin or double beds. The smaller Deluxe Suites also have a lounge area and en-suite bathroom. Two first-class chefs ensure that meals aboard are superb with outstanding South African wines to complement the food.

Although the suites are beautiful, most passengers spend their days in the dining and lounge cars. At the back end of the lounge car is an open-air balcony. Attire for lunch is smart casual. For dinner, gentlemen require a jacket and ladies should wear a dress or slacks. Return to previous page.

DESERT EXPRESS 

Desert Express differs from other tourist trains in that it is highly modern, featuring all the conveniences and luxury a traveler could ask for, while maintaining friendly Namibian hospitality and excellent service. Other trains that run in the Southern African region are generally "antique trains" that have been refurbished.

Compartment aboard the Desert Express.Accommodations: There are 24 fully air-conditioned compartments, in four sleeper coaches, each with its own en-suite facilities. Each compartment converts to a private lounge during the day and can accommodate up to three passengers. The Welwitschia Restaurant offers breakfast and a three-course dinner, exquisitely prepared.

Desert Express’ sheer luxury is evident from the first step on board the train. Reflecting unique colors and textures, this train was unmistakably born in Africa: Burnt amber upholstery, rich golden-red woods and animal motifs are just a few ways to tastefully echo the landscape through which you travel.
