In the past few years birdwatching, or "birding" as it is now commonly referred to, has become one of the fastest developing pastimes throughout the western world. One of the main attractions of birding is that birds are a highly visual and appealing subject and they occur in virtually all habitats. As Southern Africa is so diverse, with a great number of vastly different habitats, the birdlife is considerable. In the area that comprises the ornithological region of Southern Africa (the area south of the Zambezi and Cunene Rivers), nearly 900 species of birds are known to occur. Birding can involve a great deal of traveling and is an excellent excuse to journey to new parts of the planet. Many of the best places for birds are also scenically attractive and exciting to visit, and Southern Africa is no exception. African Treks offers custom-designed guided birding tours for small groups throughout the sub-region. Experienced birders as well as beginners are welcome to participate. These trips are planned and led by Peter Lawson who is a highly experienced specialist tour guide. His knowledge and ability at finding and identifying difficult species is well known by birders from various parts of the world. |
