Major scene-stealers are the "Big Five" (elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino), cheetah, hippo, and giraffe. But some visitors get as much of a kick out of spotting a kudu, a comical warthog or a tiny pygmy shrew...there's a wide range of primates, antelope, carnivores and smaller creatures to be seen. An ideal time to visit the reserves is during the winter months (May to August) when the grass is short and the animals are easily spotted. Game-viewing is best in the early morning and late afternoon, and even on a quiet day, you’re sure to see large numbers and varieties of game.
Provincial and National Parks encompass basic, self-catering establishments, and top-of-the-range accommodation. The luxurious, privately owned game lodges (mostly in Mpumalanga, northern Kwazulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape) usually provide off-the-beaten-track game drives and spotlight evening game-viewing excursions. The key to a successful African safari is to ensure that the company you choose is truly capable of providing what you are looking for in terms of the reserves in which the lodges and camps are situated, the wildlife viewing opportunities, the design and style of the camps and most importantly the knowledge and quality of the guides and staff.
