Whales & Dolphins

The Western Cape boasts some of the world’s best land-based whale and dolphin watching where the Whale Route stretches for 900 km. The high cliffs and inshore deep waters mean you don’t need to go out on expensive boat trips to see these magnificent animals. Whale watching off Southern Africa

The best whale watching is from June to November, although some species are seen all year around. Visit this
website for a complete listing of the Cape Garden Route's whale watching areas, the best times to visit, and the best whale watching view points at each location. This full-day whale watching tour to Hermanus may interest you.

Whale watchers get up close and personal in Hermanus! While 37 species of whale and dolphin occur,  only four whale species are seen with any frequency—southern right are the most common, humpback, Bryde’s, and killer whales. Females are found throughout the Whale Route between June and November when they come in from the sub-Antarctic to calve.

Common dolphins

The most common dolphins found, all year around, are Heaviside’s dolphin, dusky dolphin, bottlenose dolphin, and common dolphin which can form schools of up to 5000—a spectacular sight!
