Festivals are one of the best
ways to immerse yourself into a local culture. It is at these events
where locals are most dazzling, open, artistic and musical. Festivals
from the biggest to the smallest shed light on the human spirit of
Southern Africa. Organize your itinerary around one of the many
festivals scheduled throughout the year.
Some major highlights: The Grahamstown
Festival, held annually in July, attracts more than 50,000 visitors and
features dance, theater, music, opera, fine art, film, traditional
crafts and cabaret. The Roodepoort Eisteddfod near Johannesburg
draws 8,000 international participants each September or October. Pretoria
celebrates a glorious display of lavender flowers at October's Jacaranda
Festival. The annual Cape Malay New Year's festival is a party in the Cape
Town streets, with vibrant costumes, joyous music and a parade.
You'll also run across numerous weekend music festivals nationwide.

Africa's musical imprint on
the world stage is immense, so be sure to take advantage of Southern
Africa's international music scene. You can see top international
performers as well as talented local stars performing fine music,
theater and dance. Music is steeped in many familiar roots from the
syncopated rhythms of progressive jazz to the inspiring vocals of a
gospel chorus. Listen to world-class symphonies and international opera
stars or enjoy Malay improvisations, Afrikaans folk songs and Indian
chants.
With its infectious rhythms,
lively music and colorful costumes, traditional African dance is
something that cannot be explained but must be experienced. Groups
perform throughout the country in cultural villages and urban venues.
The national dance knockouts are also a highlight. If your taste runs to
classical dance, you'll find top-notch ballet companies in larger
cities.
