Cooking in the
Strangest Places...
Indaba News Felix Unite Catering never fails to please the culinary cravings of film stars, no matter how remote the location. "Since the introduction of Felix Unite Production Support, Tented Camps and Unit Services, nothing is impossible any more," said Felix Unite Catering managing director Steven Glass. "If a director wants to shoot on the top of a mountain or in the middle of the desert miles from anywhere, these divisions create the infrastructure and we simply move in with a comprehensive kitchen, refrigeration trucks... the works." The Namibian desert, the desolate flatlands of Verneuk Pan south of Upington, mountainous areas near the Cedarberg, and St. Helena Bay on the Cape West Coast are just a few of the locations used last year for feature films like The Cell, Shark Attack, and Dr. Lucille, the television series Soutmansland and commercials for Land Rover, Vodafone, Mazda, Kodak and other leading international brands. The 10-week production period of the South African TV series Soutmansland, filmed in the saltpans near St. Helena, meant 18-hour working days for chefs Wanda Cronje and Michael van Schalkwyk, who produced three meals daily for crews of up to 60 people. "The production company took over the entire hotel in St. Helena Bay and we were given the use of the kitchens," said Steven. "Logistically it wasn't an easy one, though, as we had to deliver to the saltpans a good 45 minutes away." Judging from a sample of the letters of congratulations from clients, Felix Unite Catering gets it right every time:
