South
African Airways (SAA)
The
basic guidelines on international flights: two pieces of luggage to and from South Africa with a maximum weight of
50 pounds per piece. You may carry on one bag to fit under the seat - its weight
should not exceed 18 pounds - in addition to a purse or briefcase.
On domestic flights
within South Africa: you are
allowed one 45 pound bag on
South African Airways and a carry on. If flights are full, you may be charged extra for overweight luggage.
On fly-in safaris: bush pilots
require ONLY soft "duffel" style bags and strictly enforce a total maximum weight of
26 pounds baggage per person.

Tips... |
 |
Pack critical items and spare under
garments in your carry on
luggage in case your booked bag is delayed or lost. |
 |
Put a bright sticker on your luggage to make it easier to spot and prevent confusion. |
 |
Wrap duct tape around your water or shaving cream bottle for emergency repairs of luggage and other items. |
 |
Use
Space Bags for security purposes and extra packing space! |
 |
Extra
bags can be stored in most major airports for a reasonable fee.
Johannesburg International Airport has locker storage
downstairs, which makes it convenient to store your extra bags
before your next module or safari; and collect them again before
connecting to an international flight departing JIA. |
